From April 1, Samarkand International Airport in Uzbekistan will begin operating new direct flights to the major cities of Baku, Azerbaijan, and Krasnoyarsk in East Siberia, following the record growth and passenger numbers of 2024.
Azerbaijan Airlines will operate the new routes to Baku from Samarkand twice a week, while Ural Airlines’ will do a single weekly flight, both from Samarkand Airports’ new terminal, operated by the airport management company Air Marakanda.
Ulugbek Shamsikulov, chief executive of Air Marakanda, said: “We will begin the summer season with important new services to Baku and Krasnoyarsk. These flight connections will strengthen the cultural, tourist and business ties between Uzbekistan and these two important countries, while providing passengers with convenient and affordable air transport links.”
As the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku is a tourist hotspot for the nation with attractions like the Old City, while Krasnoyarsk is the largest city in east Siberia and the economic, educational, cultural, capital for the East Siberian Region.
Samarkand International Airport has become the fastest growing airport in Europe and Central Asia, according to figures from the Airports Council international (ACI), with a 36.6 per cent increase from 2023 at 1.38 million passengers. It grew twice as quickly as the next growing airport in the region and asserts that the new routes to two of the cultural hubs in the region will support its expansion even further.
