The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA), the managing authority of Katowice Wojciech Korfanty International Airport in Pyrzowice, Poland, has announced its 2024 cargo performance figures, showcasing remarkable growth in freight traffic.
From January through December 2024, the airport’s cargo terminal handled 37,182 tonnes of freight – a 3.5% increase (1,248 tonnes) compared to the 35,934 tonnes recorded in 2023. This marks the second-highest annual cargo volume in the airport’s history, just behind the record-breaking 40,646 tonnes achieved in 2022.
The cargo terminal at Katowice Airport is a critical hub for southern Poland, with major players like DHL Express, UPS, and FedEx operating divisions there. Lufthansa Cargo also manages a Road Feeder Service (RFS) freight consolidation facility on-site, further enhancing the airport’s connectivity.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises significant advancements in Katowice’s cargo capabilities. Lufthansa Cargo will introduce regular cargo flights to Frankfurt, utilising Airbus A321F aircraft, while an all-cargo route connecting Ürümqi, China, to Katowice Airport was successfully launched in October 2024.
As one of Poland’s largest regional airports, Katowice Wojciech Korfanty Airport continues to strengthen its position as a leader in both charter and cargo traffic, driving growth and connectivity in the region.
Artur Tomasik, president of the board of the GTL SA, said: “There is a lot to suggest that we have passed the post-Covid-19 adjustment of cargo traffic. We expect further growth of handled goods in 2025. Currently, as part of our investment programme for 2024-2032, we are preparing the next projects which will allow us to develop air cargo infrastructure. We want Katowice Airport to become an e-commerce handling hub in this part of Europe.”
