Icelandair on track for growth, reporting a record load factor in February

In February 2025, Icelandair reported a record load factor of 79.8% and strong traffic numbers that reflect positively on the airlines’ plans to continue expanding into new markets and growing its footprint in the aviation industry.

Bogi Nils Boganson, president and chief executive of Icelandair, said: “We are pleased to once again report strong traffic numbers, highlighting the trust and value our customers place in Icelandair and our services. Notably, we achieved a record load factor in February this year on an 8% increase in capacity compared to last year.”

Iceland’s flagship carrier transported 251,000 passengers, which was a 7% increase from February 2024 and reported that 40% of customers were travelling to Iceland, 20% from Iceland, 33% were through-passengers, and 7% were travelling within Iceland. Its on-time performance was 80.5%.

This year’s stronger load factor offset the airlines decreased yield, which totalled 8.0 US cents, ensuring similar passenger unit revenue to 2024.

The airline’s CO2 emissions decreased by 6% per operational ton kilometre (OTK) compared to February last year which it says is due to higher load factor and positive impact of continued fleet renewal, with an increase in flights operated by the fuel-efficient B737 MAX and A321 LR aircraft. According to Boganson, the fleet now includes a second airbus, with two more set to be delivered in the coming months.

Icelandair also launched ticket sales for its newest interline partnership with Southwest Airlines, improving connectivity to many markets in North America, starting with a connection through Baltimore (BWI).

Boganson said of the expansion, “To date, we have received bookings from 43 airports in the US on this new partnership. As we look forward to a busy summer our preparations are well underway.”
