Horizon Air’s pilot development program opens its doors to local students in Hawaii

Aspiring pilots in Hawaii can now apply to join a local pilot development program with Horizon Air, a regional subsidiary airline of the Alaskan Air Group which includes Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, in anticipation of a future demand for pilots across Horizon Air’s global network.

The pilot development program is a first for Hawaii and will train students from flight schools located across the islands, providing them with a $12,500 training stipend, as well as a conditional job offer for students who meet the eligibility requirements at graduation.

Hawaii lieutenant governor, Sylvia Luke, said: “The aviation sector plays a crucial role in keeping Hawaii’s residents and islands connected to the world. By training and retaining homegrown pilots, this program strengthens the future of air travel to and from our islands.”

The program currently has over 430 students enrolled who will have opportunities to work at one of the seven pilot bases Horizon Air has in the Pacific Northwest after graduation.

“We are very excited to provide pilots from Hawaii not only an opportunity to join us at Horizon but also a path to eventually come home to Hawaii to fly the rest of their careers,” said Carlos Zendejas, vice president of flight operations for Horizon Air.

The program will also offer trainees mentorship opportunities with current pilots, access to Horizon Air company events, and chances to network with professionals in the industry.

Anais Rodriguez, a student pilot at Pacific Flight Academy, said: “This program is a game-changing opportunity – one that has never existed before – for aspiring pilots from across Hawaii to be able to train right here in the state and potentially advance into careers with a world-class airline.”

“Investing in local students through Horizon Air not only supports Hawaii’s economy but also empowers the next generation of pilots,” said the Lt. governor.
