An initiative has been launched at Hamad International Airport (DOH) to trial autonomous vehicles in airside operations.
In a first for the region, the proof-of-concept trials is a collaborative effort between Qatar Aviation Services (QAS), the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QTSP), and MATAR, the Qatar Company for Airports Operation and Management.
The incorporation of unmanned transport buses and baggage tractors at the airport aims to improve operational safety and efficiency for the airport and will be capable of running 24/7 in any weather conditions. It will also feature real-time monitoring and automated charging for the vehicles.
The Level 4 autonomous vehicles will require no human intervention, and instead rely on AI-driven systems instead, GPS technology, and different intelligent sensors and lidars to function. The proof-of-concept trials are the first step to “shaping the future of smart mobility,” as Dr. Jack Lau, President of QSTP put it.
If it succeeds, the initiative will not only create added ease for air travel in Qatar, it will serve to bring the region closer to the Qatar National Vision goal for 2030, which focuses on making the area a hub of technological advancement and sustainable living.
Hamad Ali Al Khater, chief operating officer at Hamad International Airport, said: “Our airport is proud to lead the way by trialing autonomous vehicles. This initiative reflects our dedication to enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability.”
“We have an ambitious vision for the years ahead—one that demands a company-wide commitment to execution and innovation. At QAS, we are driven by a relentless pursuit of advancement and excellence,” said Murat Nursel, senior vice-president at QAS.
