Qatar Airways to acquire 25% of Virgin Australia

Middle Eastern flag carrier Qatar Airways is to acquire a 25% minority share of Virgin Australia from Bain Capital (subject to FIRB approval).

Both airlines are upbeat about the move, which Qatar says will allow for a ‘deeper strategic relationship’ between the airlines and will allow the possibility of reaching new destinations.

The minority stake also serves as what Qatar describes as a ‘cornerstone investment’ ahead of an anticipated return of Virgin Australia into public ownership.

Virgin Australia Group Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Jayne Hrdlika, said: “This partnership brings the missing piece to Virgin Australia’s longer-term strategy and is a huge vote of confidence in Australian aviation. Importantly, it will further strengthen Virgin Australia’s ability to compete over the long term, which will inevitably translate into more choice and even better value airfares for consumers as well as additional Australian aviation jobs”.
