MRO Europe: IAI secures FAA approval for LEAP-1B maintenance

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has received certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to perform QT-level maintenance on CFM LEAP-1B engines.

This achievement is a key milestone as the company prepares to receive final certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the same engine.

This announcement follows IAI’s earlier success in securing both FAA and EASA certification for QT-level maintenance of CFM LEAP-1A series engines.

These certifications mark a significant expansion in IAI’s engine MRO capabilities, which already include services for a variety of engines, such as the CFM56-3/5/7, V2500, and PW4000.

By adding the LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines to its MRO offerings, IAI claims it is positioning itself to serve a broader range of global customers. The company’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and five decades of industry expertise will support its new capabilities, further enhancing IAI’s competitive edge in the engine MRO market.

Shmuel Kuzi, vice president and general manager of IAI’s Aviation Group, said: “IAI’s Aviation Group is expanding the portfolio of solutions it offers its customers in the MRO sector as part of our long-term strategy, which sees this sector as a key growth driver alongside additional activities such as passenger-to-freighter conversion.

“The entry of IAI’s MRO division into LEAP engine maintenance is a significant milestone in realising this vision, and we look forward expectantly to further milestones shortly.”

Ido Ben Cnaan, vice president and general manager for the MRO division of IAI Aviation Group, said: “Obtaining certification for the maintenance of the CFMI LEAP-1A & LEAP 1B Engine Series represents a significant step in our growth and expansion strategy, enabling us to provide unparalleled MRO services to as many customers as possible, with full overhaul capability for LEAP engines scheduled for next year.

“In addition, we are in the process of expanding and upgrading our engine MRO facility to enhance capacity and slot availability. IAI’s Aviation Group’s MRO division has been a leader in engine MRO services for over five decades, and these developments are crucial in our strategic preparations to meet the continuously growing market demand for our services.”

The announcement was made during Aviation Week’s MRO Europe 2024 event in Barcelona.
