Avelia has launched Avelia Air Freight Solutions, expanding its expertise in sustainable aviation into the air freight sector.
With proven success in business travel, delivering over 18 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and reducing more than 165,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions – equivalent to over 290,000 London-to-New York flights – Avelia is now tackling the need for decarbonisation in air cargo using its blockchain-powered platform.
With 35% of global trade by value transported by air, and air freight responsible for an estimated 19% of aviation emissions, the sector faces growing pressure to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Freight forwarders and shippers often struggle with complex tracking, reporting, and coordination challenges across global supply chains.
Avelia’s new solution helps freight forwarders and their shipping customers reduce emissions by enabling them to share SAF-related environmental benefits. Using its platform, SAF’s emissions reduction attributes can be allocated across the value chain, allowing both freight forwarders and shippers to meet their emissions disclosure requirements and sustainability goals.
The platform is adaptable, allowing freight forwarders to implement SAF programmes for their customers or integrate with existing initiatives. Its blockchain technology ensures secure, transparent tracking of SAF attributes.
Since its 2022 launch, Avelia has achieved:
External verification and validation following ISO 14064-3 standards
SAF delivery across 13 global airport locations
Integration with the existing global fuel network
Recognition from over 35 airlines and corporations participating in the programme.
Raman Ojha, president of Shell Aviation, said: “The high cost of SAF requires innovative solutions. By enabling the sharing of environmental attributes between physical SAF users and organisations seeking to meet their sustainability targets, Avelia creates a pathway for broader participation in aviation decarbonisation.
“Avelia is now evolving to meet the air freight sector’s need for solutions to demonstrate verified emissions reduction progress. Through enabling freight forwarders to access and allocate SAF environmental attributes to their shipping customers, both parties can access these attributes for emissions disclosure while supporting broader SAF adoption.”
By extending its solution to air freight, Avelia is creating new opportunities for stakeholders across the aviation value chain to accelerate SAF adoption and advance the sector’s decarbonisation journey.
